How to add many follower accounts at once: bulk import for trade copying

Updated

Connecting accounts one by one is fine for two or three. If you manage a few dozen client accounts that all copy the same master, it is a long afternoon of typing logins.

The bulk import of SnapCopier takes a list: you paste it from a spreadsheet or load a CSV file, it is checked, and the accounts are connected and, if you want, linked to your master in one go. This guide shows how, and what to do when a line fails.

When bulk import is the right tool

Bulk import is for accounts you are authorised to manage and whose logins you already hold, for example client accounts of a money manager. It adds many accounts quickly.

If you would rather not hold your clients’ logins at all, give each of them an invite link to your master instead: they sign up, enter their own account details and choose their own risk, and you never see their login. Bulk import and invite links can be mixed.

Only add accounts that you are authorised to connect. A follower account needs its trading password, because the copies are placed on it; a master can connect with the read-only investor password.

Prepare the list

One account per line. Most lists are one broker server, so the server is chosen once above the list and the lines only carry the login, the password and an optional label:

LineWhen to use it
login passwordThe label becomes “MT5 login” or “MT4 login”
login password labelA name you can recognise in the account list, such as the client’s name
server login password labelA line on another server of the same platform: start it with the server name
  • Separators: a tab (a paste from a spreadsheet), a semicolon, a comma or spaces. “Auto” picks the first one that every line has.
  • Quotes: put a field in quotes if it contains the separator, for example a password with a comma.
  • A header line that starts with “login”, “server” or “account” is skipped.
  • A CSV file can be loaded instead of pasting. It is read in your browser and is not uploaded as a file.

Import step by step

  1. 1Open Accounts, choose Add account, and switch to the Bulk import tab.
  2. 2Choose the role (slaves for followers), the platform and the broker server.
  3. 3For followers, pick the master in Follow master if every new account should copy it. Each new follower then copies that master with the master’s default settings.
  4. 4Paste the list or load the CSV file.
  5. 5Press Check list. Nothing is sent to a broker yet. The check finds unknown servers, lines that repeat, accounts that are already connected and lines over your account limit.
  6. 6Press Add accounts. Each account is verified with a live connection to the broker before it is saved, a few at a time, and the result appears line by line.

When a line fails

A failed line does not stop the others. Use Retry failed to send only those again, or Edit the rest to put the lines that were not added back into the box and correct them.

What you seeWhat to do
Unknown serverCheck the server name against the one in your broker’s MetaTrader, or search it once with the Broker server search.
Connection failedThe login or password is wrong, or the broker is not reachable. Check them in a terminal.
Investor password on a followerA follower must trade, so it needs the trading password. An account with only an investor password can be a master.
Netting account as a followerA follower has to be a hedging account. See [hedging vs netting accounts](/guides/hedging-vs-netting-accounts-copy-trading).
Already connectedThe account is already connected to a profile. Remove it there first, or leave the line out.

After the import

  • Settings follow the master. Every setting of a follower link comes from the master’s defaults unless the follower sets its own, so changing a default on the master reaches all of them at once.
  • Check the sizes. With accounts of different sizes, the lot sizing decides how big each copy is. How lot sizes are calculated explains the modes.
  • Check a few copies. Open the copy log of one or two followers after the master’s next trade.

Questions

How many accounts can I add at once?

As many as are on the list, up to your account limit. The check marks the lines that are over the limit, so you see them before anything is connected.

Is my list stored?

The pasted text stays in your browser. An account is saved only after its connection works, and its login is stored encrypted.

Can I mix brokers in one import?

Yes. Start a line with the server name to put it on another server of the same platform, or run the import once per broker.

Can I import masters this way too?

Yes. Choose masters as the role. A master can connect with a read-only investor password.

Try it with your own accounts

Connect a master and a follower and watch the first copy appear in the log.
