Is it safe to connect your MT4 or MT5 account to a cloud trade copier?
Updated
To copy a trade, a copier has to be connected to your trading account. That is a fair thing to hesitate about. The answer depends on which password you hand over, what the copier does with it, and how the service looks after it.
This guide explains what each MetaTrader password allows, where your money actually is, how SnapCopier protects the logins and your SnapCopier account, and a short checklist you can use on any trade copier before you connect an account.
What each MetaTrader password allows
Every MT4 and MT5 account has two passwords. They differ in what they let a connected program do:
| Password | What it allows | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Investor password | Read-only: see balance, open trades and history. No orders can be placed or changed. | A master account that only needs to be watched |
| Trading password (MetaTrader calls it the master password) | Place, change and close trades. It cannot be used to withdraw funds. | A follower account, because the copies are placed on it |
The “master password” of MetaTrader is not the same thing as a master account in copy trading. A master account is the one that is copied from; a follower account is the one that receives copies.
That is why SnapCopier lets a master connect with the investor password: the account can be copied from, and no order can ever go out on it. Followers need the trading password.
Where your money is, and what a connection can do
Your money stays with your broker. SnapCopier does not hold deposits and does not manage funds, and a MetaTrader trading password cannot be used to withdraw them: withdrawals go through your broker’s client area, not through the trading connection.
What a trading connection can do is trade: open, change and close positions on that account. So the practical exposure of a follower account is trading activity, and you stay in control of it:
- Pause a link and the copying stops. With Close copies when paused switched on, the copies close too.
- Remove an account from your profile and it is no longer connected.
- Change the password at your broker and any program that still has the old one can no longer log in.
- Set limits on follower accounts: a maximum slippage, a maximum lot, and margin protection (see how lot sizes are calculated).
How SnapCopier protects the logins
- Stored encrypted. Account logins are stored encrypted with AES-256-GCM.
- Read-only masters. An account connected with an investor password, or marked read-only, never receives an order.
- Followers keep their details private. A follower can enter their own account details through an invite link, so the signal provider never sees them.
- You can remove them. Removing an account deletes it, with its stored login, from your profile.
- One trader per account. An account is traded by exactly one node at a time, so a trade is never copied twice.
Protecting your SnapCopier login
- Sign in with Google if you prefer, instead of a password.
- Two-factor authentication. Turn it on in Settings with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator. After that, signing in with your password also asks for the 6-digit code from the app. You get recovery codes for the case that you lose your phone.
- Password storage. Your password is stored only as a salted bcrypt hash, never as text.
- Lockout. After five wrong attempts, sign-in is locked for up to 15 minutes.
Use a password you do not use anywhere else, and keep the recovery codes of two-factor authentication somewhere safe, for example in a password manager.
A checklist for any trade copier
- 1Which password does it need? A master account should work with the read-only investor password.
- 2Are logins stored encrypted? And can you remove an account and its login yourself?
- 3Can followers keep their login to themselves? An invite link is better than sending a password to a signal provider.
- 4Does it offer two-factor authentication and a Google sign-in?
- 5Is there a public status page, a way to contact support and published terms? A service you cannot reach is hard to trust with a login.
- 6Do you understand the settings before going live? Lot sizing, maximum slippage and what happens to open trades when you pause. Start with a demo account.
Trading forex and CFDs carries a high level of risk. SnapCopier copies orders between accounts you connect; it does not give financial or investment advice.
Questions
Can a trade copier withdraw my money?
Not with a MetaTrader trading password. It lets a connected program trade on the account, but withdrawals go through your broker’s client area. The copier also does not hold deposits.
Should I connect my master account with the investor password?
Yes, when you only need to copy from it. The investor password is read-only, so no order can ever be placed on that account through the connection.
What if I change my MetaTrader password?
The connection stops working, because the stored login no longer matches. You can enter the new password in the account’s settings to reconnect.
Is two-factor authentication required?
It is optional for users: turn it on in Settings if you want a code from an authenticator app on top of your password. You can also sign in with Google.
Try it with your own accounts
Connect a master and a follower and watch the first copy appear in the log.
