How to copy trades between MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5

Updated

MT4 and MT5 are separate platforms with their own order model, and a copier built into one terminal only sees that platform. Copying a trade from an MT4 master to an MT5 follower, or from MT5 to MT4, needs something that watches one account and places orders on the other.

SnapCopier does this from the cloud. It connects to each broker’s trade server directly, follows the master account and repeats every change on the followers, in either direction and between any brokers. This guide covers what differs between the platforms, what the copier takes care of, and what you should check yourself.

What differs between MT4 and MT5

MT4MT5
Several positions on one symbolYes, every order is independentOn hedging accounts. A netting account holds one position per symbol
Partial closeThe order is closed and the rest reopens under a new ticketThe position keeps its identity and its volume shrinks
Pending order typesBuy/Sell Limit and Buy/Sell StopThe same, plus Buy/Sell Stop Limit

On top of that, every broker names its symbols, sizes its contracts and sets its volume steps in its own way. Those differences exist between two MT4 brokers as well, but they decide whether a copy comes out right when the master and the follower are on different platforms.

What the copier handles for you

  • Partial closes on MT4. The new ticket MT4 creates for the remainder is recognised as the same trade, so the follower keeps following it and a later close still finds its copy.
  • Every change, not only the open. Stop loss and take profit changes, pending orders (placed, moved, deleted, filled), partial closes and closes are repeated on the follower. The features page lists them all.
  • Different lot sizes. Contract sizes and account currencies differ between brokers, so each follower sizes its own copy. See how lot sizes are calculated.
  • Different symbol names. EURUSD, EURUSD.m and EURUSDm are matched automatically. See symbol names across brokers.
  • A dropped connection. After a reconnect, each follower is compared with its master and anything that was missed is repaired, without a second copy of a trade that is already there.

Set up a link between the two platforms

  1. 1Sign up for the free SnapCopier beta.
  2. 2Add the master account. Pick the platform, search for the broker’s server and enter the login. A read-only investor password is enough for a master.
  3. 3Add the follower account, on the other platform if you like. Or share an invite link, so the follower connects their own account and you never see their password.
  4. 4Choose how the follower sizes its copies. The settings show a sample calculation before anything is copied.
  5. 5Open a small trade on the master and watch the copy appear in the log, with the time it took and the reason for anything that was skipped.

The steps are the same for MT5 to MT4: the platform is a property of each account, not of the link.

Limits to know

  • MT5 netting accounts cannot be followers. A netting account merges trades into one position per symbol, so it cannot hold copies of separate master positions. Hedging accounts work on both platforms.
  • Stop-limit orders exist only on MT5. If you copy pending orders from an MT5 master to an MT4 follower, test that case with a small order first.
  • Your broker and your prop firm decide whether copying is allowed. Some firms restrict copying between accounts, so read their rules before you connect.
  • Speed depends on both brokers. The copy log splits each copy’s time into our own processing, the wait for a price and the broker’s execution, so you can see where the time went.

Questions

Can I copy from MT5 to MT4?

Yes. A link works in all four directions: MT4 to MT4, MT5 to MT5, MT4 to MT5 and MT5 to MT4.

Do the two accounts need to be at the same broker?

No. The master and the follower can be at any brokers. Each account connects to its own broker’s trade server.

Do I need MetaTrader running anywhere?

No terminal or VPS is needed for the copying itself. If your master is driven by an expert advisor, that advisor still needs a terminal somewhere. See copying without a VPS.
