Symbol names across brokers: how a trade copier matches EURUSD.m to EURUSD

Updated

The same instrument has many names. One broker trades EURUSD, another EURUSD.m or EURUSDm, a third #EURUSD. Gold is XAUUSD at one broker and GOLD at the next, and the Dow Jones index is US30, DJ30 or WS30. A copier that sends the master’s symbol name unchanged fails on every broker that spells it differently.

SnapCopier matches symbols across brokers automatically. This guide explains how, where it deliberately stops, and how to set a symbol by hand.

How the match works

Every symbol name is reduced to one canonical instrument, and symbols are matched on that. These broker decorations are recognised:

KindExamples
Prefix#US30, _EURUSD, .DE40
Separated suffixEURUSD.m, EURUSD_i, XAUUSD-ECN, US30.cash, EUR/USD
Lower-case suffixEURUSDm, XAUUSDpro, US30cash
Account-type suffix after a name like GOLDECN, PRO, RAW, STP, VIP, ZERO, MINI, MICRO, PLUS, CASH, SPOT, STD, X

On top of the decorations, common alternative names are treated as the same instrument:

InstrumentAlso known as
GoldXAUUSD, GOLD
Dow JonesUS30, DJ30, WS30
Nasdaq 100NAS100, USTEC, US100
S&P 500US500, SPX500
DAXGER40, DE40, DAX
Crude oilUSOIL, WTI, XTIUSD
Brent oilUKOIL, BRENT
BitcoinBTCUSD, BITCOIN

The list is longer than this table: it also covers, among others, the FTSE, Nikkei, CAC, Euro Stoxx, ASX 200, Hang Seng, natural gas and Ethereum.

Picking the symbol the follower can trade

A broker often lists several variants of one instrument, for example EURUSD and EURUSD.r, and only one of them is open for trading. The copier chooses the first candidate that exists on the follower and can be traded. If the server still rejects the order, it moves on to the next variant.

What it refuses to guess

A wrong match is worse than a skipped trade, because it puts money into a different instrument. So the matching is strict in two places:

  • Futures contracts are not spot. A name that ends in a month code and a year, such as XAUUSDZ6 or XAUUSDH27, is an expiring contract and is never treated as spot gold.
  • Unknown suffixes are not assumed to be harmless. After a name like GOLD, an upper-case suffix counts as an account-type decoration only if it is one of the known ones above. Any other suffix is not guessed at.

Setting a symbol by hand

Where the automatic match is not what you want, map the symbol yourself. A manual mapping is used on its own: no other candidates are tried for that symbol. You can set it in two places:

  • As a default on the master. Every follower of that master inherits it.
  • On one follower. Only that link uses it, and it stays when you later change the master’s defaults.

Symbol whitelists and blacklists work on the canonical names too, so listing EURUSD also covers EURUSD.m and EURUSDm at the followers.

When a symbol does not exist at the follower

Not every broker offers every instrument. If no candidate exists or none can be traded, the trade is skipped and the reason appears in the copy log. Before going live, place a minimum-size trade on each instrument you trade and check the log.

Questions

Do my master and follower need the same symbol names?

No. Prefixes, suffixes and common aliases are matched automatically, and you can map a symbol by hand where needed.

What happens if the follower’s broker does not offer the symbol?

The trade is skipped, and the copy log shows why. Nothing is opened on a different instrument.

Can I copy only some symbols?

Yes. Use a whitelist to copy only the symbols you list, or a blacklist to copy everything except them. Broker suffixes do not matter for the lists.
